Yellowstone Explosion Closes Biscuit Basin

Tourists Capture Video of Event

The Biscuit Basin area of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is closed following a hydrothermal explosion Tuesday morning park officials said in a press release. The explosion occurred around 10 am In the Biscuit Basin area of the park.

Several tourists captured video of the event and in some footage an adult can be heard yelling, "Oh my God!" as a surprise blast of rock water and steam sends dozens running for safety. In this photo released by the National Park Service park staff assess the damage.

Biscuit Basin contains a small collection of thermal features. Many however are small gem-like encrusted pools and geysers including Silver Globe Spring Sapphire and. The basin is named for the unusual biscuit-like deposits that used to surround Sapphire Pool according to the parks website.
