Listeriosis Outbreak Linked to Deli Meat

At Least 2 Dead, 28 Hospitalized

What to Know About the Outbreak

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning Friday about a deadly multistate listeria outbreak connected to deli meat. At least two people have died and more than two dozen others have been sickened in an outbreak that appears to be connected to meat sliced. Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause severe infections in people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or with weakened immune systems. The CDC is advising people in these high-risk groups to avoid eating deli meat unless it is reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

The outbreak has been linked to meat sliced at deli counters in several states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The CDC is still investigating the source of the outbreak, which has been ongoing since at least January 2023. The CDC is also advising people in high-risk groups to avoid eating raw sprouts, raw milk, unpasteurized cheese, and raw fish or shellfish.

Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, listeria infection can lead to meningitis, bloodstream infections, and even death. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, especially if you are in a high-risk group, it is important to see a doctor immediately.
