Coriana Moore, 17, Pitches in to Clean Up

Greenfield, Iowa

GREENFIELD, Iowa (AP) - Authorities were still counting the dead and wounded Tuesday after a series of tornadoes tore through Iowa, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

At least six tornadoes struck the state, the National Weather Service said, with the hardest-hit areas being Greenfield, Winterset and Norwalk.

In Greenfield, a tornado touched down near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and 9th Street, destroying several homes and businesses. Coriana Moore, 17, was one of the many residents who pitched in to help with the cleanup effort.

"It's heartbreaking to see your community like this," Moore said. "But I'm glad I can help out in any way I can."

The tornadoes also caused widespread damage in Winterset, where the historic courthouse was heavily damaged. In Norwalk, a tornado destroyed the city's high school.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said at least six people had been killed in the tornadoes, and dozens more were injured.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has declared a state of emergency and has activated the Iowa National Guard to assist with the cleanup and recovery effort.
